OOPS (Opensource Opencourseware Prototype System) *

This site invites volunteers to help transcribe many available Open Educational Resources (OER) video lectures into English. The OERs included in this site are from MIT OCW** and many other insitutions. You don't need to be able to speak Chinese to help. Everyone who can understand and type English is encouraged to participate.

What do I do?

As a volunteer-based project, we ask you to adopt the file(s) you wish to transcribe. Here is a list of courses containing video lectures. Browse through the list and select the ones you think you would enjoy. Once you have located the lecture(s) you wish to transcribe, simply click on the "Edit" link on the top right-hand side of the page (you may have to scroll your screen to the top to see the link) and add your name and email to the corresponding cell. That is it. Once you have finished transcribing, come back to this site and copy and paste the text into a placeholder that will have been setup for you.

Let us hear from you

Please email grace.mf.lin (@) gmail (dot) com for any additional questions, remarks or suggestions you may have about this project.

*Opensource Opencourseware Prototype System (OOPS) is a grass roots effort to localize MIT's OCW into Chinese. Please visit the OOPS project web site: http://www.myoops.org/twocw for traditional Chinese, and http://www.myoops.org/cocw for simplified Chinese. That is, if you read Chinese.

I'm a new user who can help me.

From Lucifer Chu [211.22.33.3] - 9/22/04 10:10 AM

Hey, everyone:

I wrote a mail to Bobbe to explain the technics I was trying to use. I'll try to post it here. Some of the webpage is in Chinese, just ignore them, you don't need to understand Chinese.

I'll use this page to explain, and you don't need to understand Chinese.
This page is MIT Media Lab's chairman Negroponte's speech.
We used this free software Subtitle Worshop to create subtitles:

Then you use another freeware SubViewer http://www.digital3d.com/subviewer.asp to combine this subtitle file http://edumaterial.educities.edu.tw/twocw/20040821a.cht.srt
with the video. And wowla, The video got it's own subtitle, and the subtitle are still free to change!
The only problem is that MIT's using RM file, which is a commercial format not support by most of the freeware. We have to convert those files into wmv then we can do the job.(I will try to locate the resource to do that)
For now, I suggest those 2 brilliant kids use Negroponte's video to learn how to use Subtitle workshop.
As to where and how to acess the lecture files? Since our website keep the English part on, here's an example:

From bobbe [63.226.97.58] - 9/22/04 2:04 AM

Great job, and quick, getting this up and running.  We represent a small town trying to help in the effort.  Our vision is that this will help the deaf and people from all languages.  I'm excited to be a part.

From blambert [166.70.26.187] - 9/16/04 4:30 AM

How about making these subtitles available somewhere prominent where anyone trying to translate the videos can grab the script. Also would be nice to make the english subtitles availble to disabled english speakers (particularly the deaf). And if you were really ambitious you could remaster the video to include the subtitles. Just a few thoughts.

From SM [129.7.147.32] - 9/13/04 3:45 PM

Nice layout (seems user friendly so far) and I think the idea is wonderful!  I am not familiar with the OOPS concept so I am eager to try it out.

From drmuffin - 9/9/04 11:07 PM

But the lack of diff function for the page versioning sucks

From Guest [131.232.7.160] - 9/9/04 12:27 PM

I just want to see how this wiki works. It looks like it has abundant WYSIWYG features.

From caixia - 9/7/04 10:39 PM

Great job.

I will come back to this website a few days later. I mean after i finish my current work.
