问：我怎样加入义工？

Q: How do I start volunteering?
首先浏览一下课程表，包括视频讲座，然后选择你可能感兴趣的课题。如果你选定你想转录的课程，很简单，只需点击在页面右上角的“EDIT”（不过你可能需要滚动你的屏幕，直到最顶部才可能看到这个链接），然后在相应的空格里填上你的名字和E-mail，就可以了。现在你只需抽出时间干你的转录工作。完成转录之后，再回到这个页面，复制并粘贴文本到为你设计好的空格内就好了。

Browse through the list of courses containing video lectures and select the ones you think you would enjoy. Once you have located the lecture(s) you wish to transcribe, simply click on the "Edit" link on the top right-hand side of the page (you might have to scroll your screen all the way to the top to see this link) and add your name and email to the corresponding cell. That is it. Now you just need to find time and do the transcribing. Once you have finished transcribing, come back to this site and copy and paste the text into a placeholder that will have been setup for you.

We are doing something called the “Clean Verbatim” - the content of the professor’s lecture is verbatim, but we omit the non-verbal utterance such as 'uh..' and 'uhm..', 'double- doubled' words and 'st-st-stutters'. Remember, the goal is to help the learners learn. In addition, we are certain that MIT would appreciate our effort to make their professors sound better.

It depends on your preference. Here is what works for me. Adapt it to fit your working style. The way I transcribe is to have the video placed on the top of my computer screen, and have Word (or whatever you use to type) placed on the second half of my screen. I will listen to the video for like a sentence, pause the video (don't stop it, because then you have to start from the beginning), then go to Word file and type what I heard, then press continue on the video, listen to another sentence or so, pause the video, switch to Word, type them up and continue like this.

Of course. Personally I have tried Dragon Naturally Speaking software, a voice-to-text software to help with the transcribing. It works fine for me but I have been using it for a while which means I have "trained" the computer well enough to recognize my voice. So, if you plan to use any voice-to-text software, be aware that there will be a stiff learning curve at the beginning to train the computer to recognize your voice. Having said that, I don't believe you could just feed the video into the voice-to-text software for obvious reason - all of the speakers (voices) needed to be trained before the computer could do a decent job.

我可以推荐的一件事是， 无论你如何处理转录( 键盘输入或者语音输入), 我建议你只听并且键盘输入（或者语音输入), 即使第一次你可能会疏漏一些小的部份。 因为对于.rm格式文件,想回到你想要的时间点，是不可能很精确的。你完成了整个事情后,我建议你最好再重复一遍，这次，此时你可以对你第一次疏漏的部分进行校正和填充。

One thing I could recommend is this. No matter how you go about transcribing (type or speak), I suggest you just listen and type (or speak) even if you have miss some small part for the first round. Because with the .rm file, it is not very precise in rewinding to the exact point you wanted. Once you finished the whole thing, I suggest you repeat the entire process, only this time you will be proofreading yourself and filling in whatever you missed the first time.

A: For most video format such as .avi, the software VOBSUB could be used. In default, as long as your subtitle file, say, a .srt file has the same filename as the video file and is stored under the same folder, subtitles will be automatically incorporated into the video. However, you could also manually load a subtitle file that is stored in a different directory. VOBSUB could be downloaded from http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/subtitle_tools/vobsub.cfm. Detailed instruction could be found from HELP.

A: Our team in Shanghai has created a training PowerPoint file (Chinese version) (English version) to demonstrate the steps in creating a subtitle file that has the time codes. We use a subtitle freeware called Popsub which can be downloaded here. Inside this .rar file is a <readme.rtf>, which contains the password and a detailed user guide (in Chinese). Contact Arvid Wang (arvid@sjtu.edu.cn) if you have any question regarding creating subtitles.

Another software called Subtitle Workshop seems to be even more powerful. You can download it here. Currently we do not have training manual for this software. You are welcome to give it a try. The resulting subtitle file is compatible between the two software mentioned here.
